Frequently Asked Questions
Tailored for your virtual interior design experience at California Motifs.

1. What is virtual interior design?

Virtual interior design is a fully online service where your designer creates a customized design plan for your space without in-person visits, using your photos, measurements, and your input.

2. How does the process work?

You provide room photos, measurements, and a completed questionnaire. Your designer then creates a concept, presents the design, and refines it based on your feedback.

3. What kind of budget should I have?

My Design Consultation is the ideal place to start before making major decisions. I like to have a set of photos, basic room measurements and a completed design style questionnaire. Based on your style preferences I will provide a concept on layout, color palettes, furniture selection and overall design direction by guiding you toward the service that best fits your requirements and is tailored to your needs. The initial Design Consultation is $250.

4. Who will be my designer?

I am the primary designer for California Motifs and I look forward to working with you every step of the way. Please read my bio on the “About Us” section of the website.

5. How often will we talk?

Revisions are part of the design process and are priced according to the package you select. We will communicate as required by phone, email, and text (SMS) to achieve your highest level of client satisfaction with the project.

6. How long does the design process take?

Initial consultation is usually one hour and is done in conjunction with completing the Client Questionnaire. Accessorizing can take several weeks, while most single-room designs are completed within one month, depending on the scope of the project and responsiveness during revisions. Custom design for larger projects such as multiple rooms, whole house projects, model homes, remodels or vacation rentals can take up to 3-4 months. All of these estimates are site specific and dependent on available sourcing options.

7. Can you help with just one room?

Yes, many clients hire me to design a single room, such as a living room, bedroom, dining area, or home office.

8. Do you work with vacation rentals or Airbnb properties?

Yes, I work with both vacation rentals (VRBO) and Airbnb property owners to create lasting interiors with a warm, welcoming and memorable experience for guests. I pay special attention to the look and feel so that your photography for social media enhances the overall marketing success for the property.

9. Do you work with a variety of design styles?

Yes, I’ve lived throughout the United States and have experience with a wide range of design styles. To that end, I will work with the signature style and personal aesthetics preferred by, you, the client to ensure the interior is authentically yours.

10. Do you work outside southern California?

The vast majority of my clients will come from the greater southern California market. However, because my services are virtual, I can work with clients throughout the United States accommodating all time zones.

11. What is a mood board?

A mood board is a curated visual collage of colors, textures, furniture, and finishes that captures the overall look and feel of your design.

12. What is a 2D design?

A 2D design is a flat layout of your room showing furniture placement and spatial planning from a top-down perspective.

13. What is a 3D rendering?

3D rendering is a realistic visual representation of your space that shows how the finished room will look with selected furnishings and materials.

14. What is included in my design package?

Typically, your package may include a mood board, furniture layout, color palette, product sourcing list, and optional 3D renderings, depending on the level of service selected. Most important, you will end up with a highly curated interior design suited to your lifestyle.

15. What is a revision?

A revision is a requested change to your design after presentation. Most packages include a set number of revisions to help refine your space.

16. How many revisions are included?

The number of revisions depends on your selected package. Additional revisions can be requested for an added fee.

17. How do I provide measurements?

I will work with you to provide accurate measurements. Depending on your level of technology, they can be as simple as a rough floor plan sketch to more sophisticated digital layouts from sources such as Canva Floor Plans or SmartDraw Room Planner. Accurate measurements are essential, as designs are based entirely on the dimensions you provide.

18. Do you purchase furniture for me?

No, virtual design services typically provide a curated shopping list of vendors and their respective products. You purchase items directly at your own pace and convenience from either the list provided by the designer or your own.

19. Can I use my existing furniture?

Yes. This is quite common, especially if they are antiques/heirlooms, artwork, or decor pieces that have special significance in your life. I will incorporate existing pieces into the design where appropriate—please include photos and dimensions.

20. What if items become unavailable?

Product availability can change. Your designer will recommend similar alternatives, but final purchasing decisions are the client’s responsibility.

21. Do you provide independent contractors to assist with the design process?

The design process may include painting, wall papering, flooring, tile setting, furniture placement, electrical, lighting, plumbing, window replacement and coverings, remodel, etc. Because we do not provide independent contractors as a standard offering and have no preference to any particular contracting-service over another, here is a list of trusted websites we use to access local expertise: contractorsnest.com; www.thumbtack.com; www.indeed.com; www.angi.com; etc. Depending on your needs, we can provide you with an Independent Contractor Agreement to protect your interests, accompanied with proper legal disclaimers.

22. What if I don’t like the design?

Your included revisions allow adjustments to better align with your preferences. Clear communication and feedback help ensure the best outcome.

23. What is my responsibility during the project?

Clients are responsible for providing accurate measurements, timely feedback, and purchasing/implementing the design recommendations.
